Mission Highlight: Pandemic

PandemicWhat if you could shrink to a microscopic size and explore the human body?  Where would you go and what would you do?  Would you swim through the heart alongside a million tiny red blood cells or dance amid the electric synapses of the brain?

What if someone’s life depended on your actions, working inside his body to save his life?  That just may be the future of nanomedicine…

…and now you can experience it firsthand, in Pandemic!

Pandemic mirrors the historic collision of cultures that occurred when Hernán Cortés and the Spanish Conquistadors attempted to conquer the Aztec Empire—and brought smallpox with them.

Our courageous crews must unravel a mysterious plague, not only to save an ill patient, but also to restore hope of peaceful relations between two very different civilizations!

A Prestigious Visit

A lone whistle echoed down the polished steel corridors.  Long ranks of cadets standing at attention lined the walls.  At the far end of the corridor a door noiselessly slid open and the whistle stopped.  The silence was thick in the air–a stark contrast from the dull roar of training cadets that usually filled the facility.  Today was not any ordinary day.

In perfect synchronization all the cadets turned toward door and saluted.  Ambassador Behr majestically crossed the threshold and strode forward.  A mantle of prestige and honor surrounded him.  The cadets looked on in awe.  This was the first time they’d ever seen someone from the upper ranks of the Infinity Knights.  Their admirals had told them tales, but nothing could do the sight justice.

Ambassador Behr wore a shimmering garb of nobility, yet a soft warmth covered his face.  The cadets had long prepared for this Inspection, and they expected a much harsher eye piercing into their souls and uncovering their every flaw.  Instead they saw only kindness, energy, and support.  It seemed to them that the Ambassador was pleased with what he saw–that his approval of their Training Academy and Launch Base had paid off.

The Ambassador strode through the hall, smiling at the cadets with approval, until he arrived at the far end.  There it was.  The Transport Pad, waiting to take the Ambassador aboard the IKS Titan.  Admiral Rigorious stood to the side.  “She’s all prepped and ready for you, sir.  The crew is onboard and awaiting your arrival.  They await your command for departure.”

Ambassador Behr stood on the pad and turned around, facing the long rows of well-trained cadets.  In a blazing shimmer of light he disappeared and was transported aboard where he would accompany the day’s crew on their mission to the Sargassum System.

IKS Titan Open House / Parent’s Night / Family Launch

Hello everyone, due to the overwhelming response we’ve received in regards to our upcoming launch event we want to make an important clarification.  The launch event on March 20 is an invitation-only event geared toward educators, stakeholders, and the media.  The event will be held during a school day, so there’s a limit to the number of people we can host.  We want to give everyone a chance to see the IKS Titan firsthand, so we’ll be throwing a public open house / parent’s night / family launch event a little bit later on.  Please stayed tuned to this blog (or subscribe) for updates and details as they become available.

That said, there are still openings for educators, media representatives, and other community stakeholders at our launch event on the 20th, so please feel free to contact us for an invitation.

Thanks!  We hope to see you here at one of the two events!

Starstruck School Board

It’s never a dull moment in Dream Flight land!  Last night we had the pleasure of dazzling the Shaler Area School Board with a demonstration flight of the IKS Titan.  It was the first time most of them had seen the ship, so they didn’t really know what to expect when they stepped into our airlock and were transported onboard.

With no zero-G training whatsoever the School Board took to the controls and navigated the ship through a quick tour of outer space, ocean depths, and even a quick miniaturized jaunt through the heart and lymph nodes.  A similar adventure is in store for everyone who attends our Grand Opening next month, so don’t miss this chance to see the IKS Titan up close and personal.

The School Board learned about our standards-based curriculum, ongoing missions for Shaler students, and plans to open the center for field trips and private groups.  There are so many new adventures waiting to be had!

First Makeshop Playtest

This post is a bit belated (which is another word for tardy, which is another word for remiss, which is another word for behindhand, which is another word for “I should have posted this on Saturday but I didn’t get around to it until now, four days later, so shame on me,” which is a rather long phrase so you can see why I used “belated” instead.  My brevity is a sign of my wit.

What happened on Saturday, you ask?  We had our first playtest at the Children’s Museum’s Makeshop!

We spent two hours at the Makeshop as bright young minds from all over Pittsburgh wandered into our magical snares and took our software controls out for a test drive.  We had six stations fired up:  Engineer, Gunner, Hacker, Security Chief, Biologist, and Doctor.  All were very popular and fun was had by all.

I was impressed by how well the young kids took to the controls.  Our controls are designed for older users (ages 8 and up), but the kids in the 5-7 range did a great job too.  They might not have picked up on all the subtleties, but that didn’t slow them down one iota, which is another word for scintilla, which is another word for smidgen… okay, I’ll stop now.

One of the great things about playtesting at the Makeshop was the wide variety of users we had access to.  The controls were a hit among adults (parents, grandparents, and Makeshop staff alike), and it was a lot of fun watching mixed age groups use the controls together.  It was also heart-warming to watch all the kids show their parents how things worked… kids are much better at this sort of thing.  They aren’t afraid to just jump in and try things.

We saw quite a few kids come and go during the session, but one awesome kid with big dreams stayed the entire two hours, moving from one control to the next until he had mastered them all.

The Makeshop was an ideal spot for playtesting, and I’d highly recommend it.  We liked it so much that we’re coming back… three more times!  Stay tuned for the dates of three more playtests over the next two months or so.

Maiden Voyage of the IKS Titan

The crowd rushed forward as the hangar door began to open.  Everyone stretched forward, eager to catch a glimpse of the crew as they majestically strode toward their awaiting ship.  All the off-duty policemen, firemen, and private security guards in the county were summoned in to help maintain the throng.  They stood valiantly against the tide of cadets, civilians, and representatives of the press who had gathered for the historic event.  Much to our dismay, photography was not permitted on the launch site premises.

After long last, construction of the ship—the IKS Titan—was complete, and not a moment too soon.  Earlier that day the Infinity Knights had received an urgent request from the Priests of Delphi.  Their world is on the brink of civil war, so a response crew was immediately assembled.

The crew—17 bright young men and women in all—had trained long and hard for this day.  The air was electric with their anticipation.  In their excitement some of them even forgot how to buckle their hazmat harnesses and fumbled with them up until the final moments before boarding.

They boarded the ship, and then in a powerful fantastic moment it happened… the thing that countless hours over long days and sleepless nights had been leading up to:  the IKS Titan lifted off the ground, was enveloped in fiery bands of plasma, and then vanished through its portal to the untold adventure that awaited it.

Mission Highlight: Lusitania

Lusitania

What if you could travel back in time to a turning point in history?  What would you do if you found yourself at a historic crossroads… say, at the beginning of World War I?

If you could change events and stop the war from happening, would you?  Should you?  What would happen if you did?  How would history—and life today—be different?

Well don’t just think about it—do it… in Lusitania!

The timeline has been altered!  Lusitania takes crews back in time to the year 1915 where war rages across Europe and beneath the Atlantic Ocean.  Something is amiss, and crews must use their understanding of history, metric measures, classic literature, and the extent of their collective wits to repair the timeline before history completely unravels!

Mission Highlight: Insurrection

InsurrectionHere’s a question for you:  How can one teach about renewable energy sources and the American Revolution at the same time?  How can one illustrate the rights and responsibilities of citizens while simultaneously teaching about chemical catalysts?  What about bacteria and trade dependency?

The answer, my friend, is Insurrection.

Insurrection, the second Dream Flight Adventures™ mission, carries on our unique tradition of blending STEM concepts, history, and crucial social issues in a way that students never forget.

Insurrection drops students into the middle of a conflict between a large empire and its unsatisfied colonists.  Tensions are high, loyalties are fierce, and at any moment the entire scenario could break out into war.  The students must apply their understanding of science, history, and human nature to navigate this web of egos and agendas.  And, as always, the clock is ticking, so they must use their whole brains and every ounce of creativity they can muster to accomplish their mission.
