Intercepted Transmission

Alert!  Our surveillance grid has intercepted a top secret transmission coming from one of the Infinity Knights’ shipyards.  The message is heavily encrypted, but here’s what we’ve been able to decipher:

[static] … of the IKS Horizon is now … [static] … to shipyard.  Standard crew complement … [static] … Test pilot cadre has disembarked and is returning to …. [static] …

… flight successful.  Post-flight safety checks complete.  Hyperdrive temperature within recommended parameters … [static] …

… remain top-secret until … [static] … first of its kind … [static] ... worthy of celebration.  Columbia Shipyard out.

Whatever it is, it sounds pretty exciting.  Stay tuned as more details about the IKS Horizon are revealed.

Early Sneak Peak at the IKS Highlander

Hello troops, it’s been a bit quiet on the blog these days, but today I’m breaking radio silence to give you a sneak peak of the IKS Highlander, which is scheduled for launch next Monday, March 23 at Harrison Middle School in Baldwin-Whitehall School District.

Highlander-BridgeHere we see the bridge of the Highlander as seen from its main entry hatch.  The flight control yoke marks the spot where the Pilot sets, accompanied by teammates on either side.   Behind the pilot is a raised level with three groups of other stations, and a final raised platform for the command crew behind them (off the left side of the photo).  To the far right of this photo you’ll see the arched doorway leading to the ship’s Medical Chamber.

Highlander-Bridge-3

Here’s a view from the same point near the entry hatch but looking further left, revealing the command crew platform as well as the desks for the corner stations.  The Highlander is by far our largest simulator—it seats all 17 of our standard crew stations, but it also has two large stations in the back corners that can hold a wide variety of other stations as well.  You can expect to see microscopes, test tubes, robotics kits, or other great hands-on devices and activities housed in these stations.

Highlander-Bridge-2You’ll notice that the bridge still looks a bit bare in these photos.  There are four reasons for this:

  1. The room is huge, period.
  2. The chairs are missing and it’s not full of excited students working together feverishly.
  3. The white ceiling lights are on, which never happens during an actual mission.  During a mission the themed LED light strips create a very immersive ambience.
  4. The student stations are awaiting their metallic paneling.  Currently they are white and bare, but soon they will be donning beautifully textured panels.  Stay tuned for more photos in the coming days showing the Highlander in all its glory.

BSD-STEAM-Lab-2

But that’s not all!  Right next to the Highlander will be a giant STEAM Lab filled with hands-on projects and activities that correspond with the simulator missions.  For example, Baldwin-Whitehall students will get to learn about fish, insects, and the ecosystem firsthand through their adventures in Contaminant, and then they can enter the STEAM Lab and work with tanks full of live fish that they can study, feed, and care for.  The possibilities are endless, so stay tuned for more details as the STEAM Lab develops.

We’re all excited for the IKS Highlander’s big launch on Monday, and we’ll be sure to post all the big news as it occurs.  Until then, Admiral Starblayze over and out.

Announcing Maelstrom, our latest mission

Hello troops, today we’re delighted to announce that an all-new mission—Maelstrom—is available for all Dream Flight Adventure simulators!  Maelstrom was developed in partnership with EXPLORE! Children’s Museum of Washington DC and the Smithsonian Institution in conjunction with the launch of [Classified].  Here’s a brief introduction to hold you over until you can hop onboard an Infinity Knights vessel and embark on this mission yourself:

Maelstrom-Poster

Time is up!  Peponi is a bustling city-state on a beautiful island.  For centuries it has been a center of commerce, trade, and cultural exchange—but there’s a problem.  Peponi sits atop a volcanic island that has lied dormant for centuries but has recently become active.  With no way to stop the eruption, Peponi officials have rushed to create an evacuation plan. Peponi’s engineers have devised a brilliant system of booster rockets that will pick up the entire city and transport it over the ocean to a new location.  Their scouts have been searching for a suitable location, but unfortunately time has run out—the volcano is about to erupt and Peponi must move now!

The best location that has been found lies along the Tufani River on the far side of the Naruto Sea.  Water plays a significant role in almost every aspect of the city’s life—it provides hydroelectric power, connections for trade, irrigation for farmers, and recreation for the people.  Peponi officials have called upon the Infinity Knights—the renowned protectors and peace and justice throughout the universe—to help determine where along the river to land each part of the city to best protect its diverse way of life.

But it’s not that simple.  The evacuation booster rockets only have enough fuel for about 30 minutes, which is barely enough time to get to the Tufani River.  The Infinity Knights crew must work quickly—while the city is in flight—to identify an ideal landing spot before it arrives.

To make matters worse, the flight plan passes directly through the Nenaunir Maelstrom, a region of the Naruto Sea that is filled with treacherous storms.  No one who has ventured into the maelstrom has ever returned, but Peponi has no other choice.  They are relying on the Infinity Knights to guide them safely through the Maelstrom to their new home!

Penn Hills uses futuristic simulator to enhance elementary subjects

Yesterday Tim Means at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette published a great article about the brand new IKS Dreamcatcher.  Here’s a short excerpt:

Whether the mission involves space travel, time travel or a trip into the human body, the students’ excitement builds as they enter the simulator room because they know the next hour will be filled with an imaginative adventure in the middle of the school day.

Their wits will be challenged, their poise tested and their ability to work with others, to process information, to overcome difficulties must come to the forefront for the mission to succeed. This is serious play. This is today’s education. It’s fun and they love it.

Dream Flight Adventures Goes Global, Appoints Michael Penn as General Manager of North American Operations

It’s been a busy past week at Dream Flight Adventures, with the launch of the IKS Buccaneer and Dreamcatcher, plus a few other thrilling projects that will be unveiled shortly. But, the excitement doesn’t stop there—today we’re delighted to announce some important changes to the Dream Flight team!

Our work at Dream Flight Adventures has attracted the attention of firms internationally, and as a result I have been offered a job at a company in England that makes immersive experiences for theme parks and brands around the world. I’ve decided to take the job and in conjunction with this change I’m delighted to announce that Mike Penn—a.k.a. Admiral Rigorious—has been promoted to the rank of Fleet Admiral and will be assuming the role of General Manager of North American Operations at Dream Flight Adventures!

Mike is the Flight Director, Gifted Department Co-Chair, and STEAM Coordinator at Shaler Area School District and has been pioneering the Dream Flight magic with us from the beginning. We’re thrilled to have him involved in this new role, which he’ll perform in parallel with his ongoing work at SASD. He’ll coordinate training, serve as point-person for US-based operations, and build a community of practice among Dream Flight simulators and flight directors. Mike simply exudes the Dream Flight vision, and we couldn’t have asked for someone more qualified!

On the other side of the pond, Sarah Gardiner will continue serving as Design Director from England as Dream Flight continues to grow. We’re so excited for these big changes and are eager to take Dream Flight Adventures to new heights!

The Launch of the IKS Dreamcatcher

IKS-Dreamcatcher-Bridge

The excitement just doesn’t stop!  Hot on the heels of the launch of the IKS Buccaneer, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of the IKS Dreamcatcher in Penn Hills Elementary.

DSC_1036 Guests gathered in the school’s large cafeteria where they were greeted by an entourage of flight directors wearing stunning flight suits—I’m sooooo jealous!  They even have the school’s emblem, Dream Flight logo, and words “Flight Commander” embroidered onto the suit.  They looked incredible!

Upon arriving, each guest was given a name tag with a crew assignment—four crews in total—for their upcoming mission.

The event kicked off with some nice remarks from the district’s forward-thinking administrators, followed by a somewhat fumbled delivery of a speech by Admiral Zenobia and myself.

Then, our attention became focused on the big screen as our mission briefing began to play.  Earth was in danger, and one by one the crews were called upstairs to board the IKS Dreamcatcher on a short mission in its defense.

While waiting for their turn, each guest had the wonderful opportunity to chat with some of Penn Hills Elementary’s brightest young minds as they discussed their favorite missions and crew stations.  They were buzzing with enthusiasm for the simulator and the adventures they had had inside.  They described the gripping dangers they faced and how they used their wits to come out victorious.

They also told me about their ideas for new missions and adventures—which was one of the most exciting and satisfying parts of the night.  I simply love seeing how Dream Flight Adventures is inspiring a new generation of dreamers, thinkers, and doers!

Then, the alarm rang and it was our time to board the Dreamcatcher.

Notice the swarm of student-made dreamcatchers that fill the briefing room.  I was surprised to learn that the students had been making these for years and the launch of the IKS Dreamcatcher was just a happy coincidence.  Also, I loved the mission posters framed and mounted on the wall—it gave a very classy look to the briefing room.

The inbound crew passes through the mystic curtain…

And enters the Dreamcatcher’s bridge where they received some final guidance from Admiral Conundrum.DSC_1066

It was a magical night, and one of the crowning moments was when a student told me “Thanks for inventing this.  It’s awesome!”

Liz Hayes from Trib Total Media attended yesterday’s launch event for the IKS Buccaneer and wrote a fantastic article about it.  Truth be told, this is probably my all-time favorite article written about Dream Flight Adventures to date.  It does a great job capturing the variety, depth, and purpose of Dream Flight Adventures.  Check it out!

The Glorious Launch of the IKS Buccaneer

IKS-Buccaneer

Today the IKS Buccaneer officially launched in front of hundreds awe-struck young minds at Stewart Elementary School in the Burrell School District.

Admiral Octavius, also known as the mild-mannered Brian Colgan, directed a non-stop day of back-to-back mini missions to give each of Stewart Elementary’s 200+ students a brief taste of the incredible journeys that are now available to them on a daily basis.

Brian-Colgan-at-Work

The result of a $20,000 STEAM grant and a healthy dose of passion and commitment on behalf of the Burrell School District, the IKS Buccaneer is the latest addition to the rich and forward-looking STEM curriculum that permeates all levels of Stewart Elementary.  We’re truly impressed at the quality of the Buccaneer and the dedication of its team at Stewart Elementary.  It has been an honor bringing this exciting new simulator to fruition.

And now, without further ado, here are so more photos from the momentous day.
