Another Rousing Set of Missions Aboard the IKS Highlander

Admiral Huckelberry of the IKS Highlander continues to run epic missions with the students of J.E. Harrison Middle School, and as icing on the cake he’s put together some fantastic videos showing his students in action.

Succession

8th Grade Social Studies Students have completed a Dream Flight Adventure Mission at HMS!  These students completed the Succession Mission as well as the Succession Mission Ops STEAM Classroom activities.

While participating in the Succession Mission, Social Studies students embarked on a journey to locate a missing Oracle, appoint a new king and restore peace to the planet Megara. They then had to work with four different view points of government to construct a “New Way” of governing for the Megara People.

While working in Mission Ops the students participated in a Two Sided Political Debate.  Representing two of the fictional factions that vie for the throne, they discovered that the only way to deal with the political upheaval on Megara is to work to understand these differing views of governing.

The students then began to collaborate, create and compromise when constructing a “New Way” of governing for the Megara People.  Students had to construct new forms of government and a process to select leaders to govern.

Pandemic

6th Grade Health Students have completed the a Dream Flight Adventure Mission at HMS. These students completed the Pandemic Mission as well as the Pandemic Mission Ops STEAM Classroom activities.

While working in Mission Ops the Carnegie Science Center supported our Curriculum with their Anatomy Adventure Science on the Road exhibits. These hands on activities directly connected the content covered in Health Class to the content learned in the Pandemic Mission.

While participating in the Pandemic Mission, Health students embarked on a journey to save a sick delegate and restore peace between two nations. They had to locate viruses in the sick delegates body systems and stop them from spreading.

Dream Flight student makes robot that can solve Rubik’s cube

What were you doing when you were 11?  Chances are it wasn’t as cool as what one student—Ethan James at Shaler Area Elementary—is doing:  building a robot that solves Rubik’s cube.

Ethan-robot

Now that Ethan’s robot can solve a Rubik’s cube in about 30 seconds he’s moving on to create a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, for his schools Dream Flight Adventures simulator, the IKS Titan.

Fan Fiction

Tonight we’re delighted to share some of the creative works that our simulator missions have inspired among our students.

Our students leave our missions brimming with ideas for adventures of their own.  Many of our teachers have leveraged this to create enrichment activities, and we’ve carved out a corner of our website to showcase some of these student creations.

Tonight we’re featuring two new additions—The Nazi Run and Resistance—and we’ll be adding more as we get our hands on digital copies.  Both of these are mission concepts written as part of a language arts enrichment activity at Shaler Area Elementary.

December Community of Practice Meeting

Merry Christmas everyone, and a happy New Year!

All the holiday festivities have made us a bit tardy in sharing an update about our latest Community of Practice meeting, which took place on the 15th.  This was a historic event, as it was the first Community of Practice meeting where all five Dream Flight simulators in the continental U.S. were represented!  That’s right, we had flight directors, educators, and admins from the IKS Titan, Highlander, Buccaneer, Dreamcatcher, and Horizon in attendance!

The meeting kicked off bright and early at J.E. Harrison Middle School in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District where the flight directors toured the IKS Highlander and its accompanying Mission Ops STEAM lab.

Mike Kaleta had the morning very nicely organized and he invited Dr. Lutz, Dr. Peretin, Denice Sedlacek and Andrea Hoffman (most of their upper administration) and Scott Ross to attend.  We also had Brian Colgan and a Phys Ed teacher from Burrell who is training to be a Flight Director, Jamie Harris from Penn Hills, Heather and Mike from Shaler Area, and Heather and Rachel from Washington D.C.

We met in the “Mission Ops” room for juice and cookies for about 30 minutes and then we toured the Highlander simulator.  Mike Kaleta showed everyone several of the cinematic trailers that he’s recently made of his students running missions, and then we had a nice long discussion about our successes and challenges.  Everyone was extremely positive and energized!

We’re all looking forward to at least three more Community of Practice meetings in 2016 and we’ve tentatively arranged to meet at Penn Hills in February-March.

We then came to Shaler Area Elementary School where Mike Penn ran a 4th grade Pandemic mission in the Titan.  Everyone stayed until about 2pm.  Some of the SASD administration were able to attend and meet everyone, including Bryan O’Black, Assistant Superintendent.

Heather and Rachel from D.C. were the last two to leave.  It was great having them meet with full Pittsburgh Flight Director cohort, and we’re so glad they were able to make the trip!

IKS Highlander Completes Epic Five-Day Mission

This just in—the IKS Highlander has just returned from an epic five-day mission.

Under the direction of Admiral Huckelberry, also known as mild-mannered Michael Kaleta, the lucky 6th grade Health Students at Harrison Middle School have bravely battled ferocious diseases and saved two civilizations when it looked like all hope was lost.

On Day 1, the crew was briefed on their mission and introduced to the many crew roles available on the Highlander.  The students then completed job applications in which they used persuasive writing skills to apply for the crew positions they were most interested in.

On Day 2, the crew met in the Mission Ops lab adjacent to the simulator where they received a sealed envelope from the Infinity Knights headquarters containing their crew manifest.  They then began the rigorous process of training on their stations.

On Days 3-5 the crews flew the Pandemic mission inside the simulator and completed a variety of hands-on activities in the Mission Ops STEAM Classroom.

While working in Mission Ops the Carnegie Science Center supported the curriculum with their Anatomy Adventure Science on the Road exhibits.

Congratulations to the bright students at Harrison Middle School—and to Mr. Kaleta for building such a fantastic experience for them!

News from the IKS Artemis Charger

Hello troops, it seems like only yesterday when we shared the photos of the IKS Artemis Charger’s ground breaking.  At the time it was nothing more than a big dream and a field of dirt.

Clearing the ground

A lot has happened in the intervening months, and now the IKS Artemis Charger is nearly ready for launch.  Admiral Sai—Todd Lichtenwalter—has been working around the clock (past midnight!) over the last few weeks in order to get everything ship-shape.  Take a look at his latest handiwork.

Captains-Chair3

Here we see the underside of the Captain’s Chair, which is being wired into the ship’s mainframe.  This allows the Captain to keep close tabs on his or her entire crew, and it probably also has an emergency ejection mode as well, in case the going gets rough.

Green

Here we see the bridge undergoing routine decontamination scans in order to rid it of pesky space worms and giant tardigrades that have been known to infest Chameleon Class ships during their deep-space construction.

Tron

And here we see the Artemis Charger giving Shanghai Disneyland’s TRON Lightcycle Coaster a run for its money.

Tres hurras for the incredible workmanship being poured into the Artemis Charger in Venezeula!   Mission-Wall

Recent Adventures

With the school year ramping up around the globe we wanted to take a brief moment to give a shout out to all the great Dream Flight Adventures simulators that are busily opening the minds and expanding the horizons of our students.  Here are two examples from this week:

STEAM Showcase

Here we see Brian Colgan—also known as Admiral Octavius—at STEAM Showcase in the Pittsburgh region demonstrating how the IKS Buccaneer is enhancing education at Stewart Elementary.  He has the simulator controls running on his projector, laptop, and iPads to give educators a first-hand look at how the magic comes together.

Further south—in Venezuela—Todd Lichtenwalter is having some projector fun of this own.  Even though the IKS Artemis Charger isn’t even fully constructed, he’s already bringing educational adventures to the big screen.

That’s it for now, but there’s a lot more going on in Dream Flight land, so stay tuned for more juicy details.

Artemis Charger Construction Update

Hi troops, things have been very busy lately as we’ve been gearing up with some shiny new updates for the school year, and we’re long overdue for an update about the IKS Artemis Charger’s construction in Valencia, Venezuela.  The shipyard has been humming with activity as everyone has worked around the clock to get the ship prepped for launch.

Bulkheads

Here we see the major bulkheads in place, as of July earlier this year.  We’ve come a long way since then.

Conduit

The power conduits have been laid, and here’s the arc reactor terminal:

Arc-Reactor

The Artemis Charger is powered by a Type XIV hyperdrive, which—naturally—throws off a lot of heat, so an entire bank of coolant systems has been installed to keep it running at peak efficiency.

Coolant

Some of the most talented craftsmen in the quadrant have been called in to assist with the construction.

Shipyard

Here we see one of them working on the crew console panels, which will reside on the main bridge.

Desks

The bridge will have many mobile stations, allowing for easy reconfiguration based on the needs of the mission.

Rollers

And this… well, this is classified.  Pretend you didn’t see it.

Green-Curtain

The bulkheads have all been fused into place, and the gravity generators have been installed in the floors.  Here we see some of the AV equipment going into the ceiling.

Artemis-Charger-Construction-3

The Artemis Charger has its maiden voyage scheduled for October 5th.  We’re all anxiously awaiting the big day!
